Ashes to Ashes
Canary Sounds’ first EP, the five song “Ashes to Ashes” (named in tribute to David Bowie) was released July 17 2018.
“Ashes to Ashes” was recorded at Saga Recording (Vancouver, BC) and produced, mixed and mastered by the talented Michael Nowak (www.sagarecording.com).

Written by James Patrick Mackay while attending graduate school at the University of Alberta, the EP’s somber tones were undoubtedly influenced by long, dark Edmonton winters.

Online distribution and streaming services currently list “Ashes to Ashes” under the artist name Canary (see links below).
The project name was latter changed to Canary Sounds to distinguish it from other similarly-named acts.

Pink Guitar
(Single)
Name for a pink Cort guitar owned by Jelena Kolic (James Mackay’s wife). The song began life as simple chord exercise, which Mackay created while giving Jelena a guitar lesson, but rapidly transformed into a full-fledged song.
“Pink Guitar” was released as a single by Canary-Sounds on December 7th 2018. However, recording of the song occurred several years earlier at the home studio of the talented Christopher Quesnel. Quesnel oversaw the songs’ production, mixing and mastering. Lyrics and music were composed by Mackay, who provided vocals and played rhythm and lead guitars on the recording. The recording additionally features Quesnel on rhythm guitar and Gavin Dunn on Drums.
